The course begins by examining construction industry safety statistics and explains why construction work continues to present significant risks to employees. Learners will be introduced to relevant OSHA requirements and the importance of conducting effective risk assessments before exploring common construction-site hazards and suitable preventative measures.
Mechanical hazards are covered in detail, including risks associated with plant, machinery, equipment, vehicles, and vibration. The course also addresses physical hazards such as slips, trips, falls, working at height, electrical hazards, manual handling, and workplace violence.
The chemical hazards section explores a range of potentially harmful substances and situations, including fires and explosions, toxic chemicals, asbestos, silica dust, lead-containing paint, welding fumes, and carbon monoxide. Learners will develop an understanding of the risks these hazards can create and the controls that may be used to reduce exposure.
Biological hazards are also examined, including Lyme disease, histoplasmosis, stinging insects, poisonous plants such as poison oak, poison ivy, and poison sumac, as well as hazards associated with needlestick injuries and working near or in water.
